High School Student Summit on Mathematics and Science (Click here to view full information)

The Iowa Mathematics and Science Coalition collaborates with the Iowa Department of Education and partners with other educational associations and professional groups to promote mathematics and science education across the state.

NES Partnerships for Sustainability

In May of 2004, Iowa received a grant from NASA, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions (NASSMC) to form a partnership with the NES middle school, Sioux Central School District in Sioux Rapids, IA. The IMSC received $20,000 to promote the following five objectives: 1) to support the ongoing research-based, professional development opportunities for faculty, 2) to serve as advocates for the NES students and acknowledge their participation in research, problem solving, and design challenges relating to NASA's missions; 3) to encourage families to become involved in their children's academic growth, achievement and career exploration; 4) to increase the visibility of the NES; and 5) to promote the use of NASA resources.

Starting in the fall of 2005, the middle schools of Sioux City received a grant to become a NASA Explorer School. The IMSC will partnership with this school district as they accomplish their goals in STEM education.

NASSMC State Summit Implementation Program (NSSIP):

NSSIP, funded through NASA and the U.S. Department of Education, provides assistance to eligible state based organizations with planning, developing, administering, implementing, following-up and sustaining state science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education summits. The Iowa Summit on Mathematics, Science and Technology: Promoting Economic Development will be held in November 2005.

During the two-day event, four goal committees will be discussing critical issues and identifying action plans. The following goals will be addressed:

Goal 1: The workforce will possess the mathematics, science and technology skills to enhance Iowa's economy.

Goal 2: Communities and parents will recognize the need for quality mathematics, science and technology education for all learners.

Goal 3: All pre-kindergarten through 16 teachers of mathematics, science and technology will be highly qualified educators;.

Goals 4: Iowa's education system will be well coordinated and research based, providing learners seamless pathways across education sectors and into the workplace.
